Curriculum Updates:

Reading:
We did some early spring cleaning this week and got our books bins organized with
necessary materials. In addition, students started utilizing a Reading Log to keep track of
the books they are reading as well as how many pages they can read on a daily basis.
Students are reading daily for about 40-45 minutes!

Writing:
In writing, we talked about making it difficult for our characters to solve their problems in
their books. It helps readers connect more to their stories and helps get across the idea of
perseverance. Students got feedback from multiple partners and we will have a mini
celebration on Monday to share our writing.

Math:
We are continuing to work on subtracting double-digit equations. Students are deciding how to approach these problems - can you use quick strategy (no ungrouping), do you need to ungroup the tens, do you need to ungroup the hundreds, do you need to ungroup both tens and hundreds, would a number line strategy be more efficient? Lots to process but thinking first before attaching the problem is a great skill, not only in math.

Content:
Ms. Zobel's class studied the question, "Where do plants grow best?" We also played a plant survivor activity in which students received plant cards and had to determine the best place to plant their plant.

Mr. Skurr's class learned about the local government jobs of police chief, fire chief, public works director, planning director, and building director. This coming week we will finish our unit by learning about the parks and recreation director, city clerk, and finance director.
