Second Grade Scoop October 1-5

This coming week is Homecoming! There will be a parade on Wednesday. In addition,  students are welcome to participate in Dress Up days as follows: Mon.   - PJ Day Tues.  - Superhero Day (no costumes though) Wed.  - NDLC Wear Thrs.  - Favorite Sports Team Wear Fri.     - Orange and Black Important Dates: Wednesday, October 3 - Homecoming Parade (5:00pm from Holy Cross/St. Ignatius) Thursday, October 11 -  Skate City Night (5:30 - 8:00pm) Tuesday, October 23  - Grandparents’ Night (6:00 - 7:00pm) More info to come soon! Second Grade Scoop September 24-28

Second graders are really getting the hang of our routines! Thanks for continuing to use the agendas for home/school communication. Important Dates: Tuesday, September 25 - Family Night (5:30-7:00). Wednesday, September 26- Picture Day MAP Testing Students completed the MAP reading test and will be taking the MAP math test this week. MAP is a standardized math and reading test that is nationally normed. All of our 2nd-4th grade students take the MAP assessment three times each year: fall, winter, and spring. Results will be shared with parents at conferences in November.  Curricular Updates Reading Workshop: We've been working on tackling tricky words by using a variety of strategies and thinking, "Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?" Writing Workshop: We continue to work on personal narratives in writing. This week we studied Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements and tried out some of his techniques including ellips

Things are rolling now in 2nd grade! Please continue to review agendas and feel free to use them to communicate any routine changes or questions you have. This upcoming week will be Safety Week so students will be practicing what to do in various situations. Important Dates: Friday, September 21 - No School for Students Tuesday, September 25 - Family Night (5:30-7:00). Please RSVP by Wed. Sept. 19th. Wednesday, September 26- Picture Day Curriculum: Readers Workshop : We are building our stamina as readers and trying to read more books and for a longer time each day. This week we started practicing strategies like stop, think, and retell, as well as using Post It notes to write down thoughts to discuss with a partner. Writers Workshop : Students have finished one or more small moment stories. They are bringing their stories to life by unfreezing people (move and talk), telling small steps, and bringing out the inside (thoughts and feelings) to help keep readers e

September 10-14

We are off to a great start in second grade!  Agendas have been coming home nightly. Please remember to review this with your child and initial nightly. We will check these daily for notes and routine changes. Thank you!
