Second Grade Scoop January 28-February 1st

It's another exciting week at New Directions' Learning Community. On Monday morning Dr. Berkers will be visiting our classroom to present about dental health.  On Tuesday we will be visiting the Performing Art Center to view Charlotte's Web. Remind your child to dress nicely for this event! Monday, January 28th-Progress Reports sent home Curriculum Updates: Reading: We are continuing to get to know our characters in our book! We've been thinking about our character's feelings and traits and writing evidence to support it. This week we'll be noticing how our character changes from the beginning to the end of our stories, and how all the parts fit together. Writing: In writing we have been working to revise our realistic fiction stories to make them even stronger. We've been acting out what are characters are doing and telling the story bit by bit. This week we are celebrating NDLC. We will have 2 Family Nights this week: Tuesday will be a Block Party to include some building activities and dancing, and Thursday will be Kids Heart Challenge activities. In addition, students are welcome to participate in the dress up day themes as follows: Tuesday - Twin Day Wednesday - PJ Day Thursday - Activewear Friday - Dress Like Your Future Job Upcoming Events Celebrate NDLC Week January 22nd - Family Night 5:30 - 6:30 Block Party January 24th - Family Night 5:30 - 7:00 Kids Heart Challenge January 25th - 2nd Grade Classroom Celebration: Bring in a Board Game. Second Grade Scoop January 14-18

It's hard to believe this Friday marks the end of the first half of the year. The time has gone by so quickly. Students have made so much growth this year! We completed our reading MAP last week and will be taking the math MAP test this week. Mr. Skurr's class will be testing on Tuesday and Ms. Zobel's will be on Wednesday. In science today students had the chance to make their own seed flyer out of paper and see how it would fly.  The choices were spinner, glider or rotocopter. Ask your child how it went!

Second Grade Scoop January 7-11

Students did a great job this week of getting back into the school routine. This coming week will be a busy one as we start new units in Reading, Writing, and Math. We will also be doing MAP testing for Reading on Tuesday (Skurr) and Wednesday (Zobel), taking a mid year Math assessment, and completing a Spelling inventory. This information helps us track student progress and lets us know in what areas and skills to provide more support. So far we have discussed why we read fiction - to laugh, to relax, and to help us learn how to be better people.
