Second Grade Scoop September 24-28

Second graders are really getting the hang of our routines! Thanks for continuing to use
the agendas for home/school communication.

Important Dates:
Tuesday, September 25 - Family Night (5:30-7:00).
Wednesday, September 26- Picture Day

MAP Testing

Students completed the MAP reading test and will be taking the MAP math test this week. MAP is a standardized math and reading test that is nationally normed. All of our 2nd-4th grade students take the MAP assessment three times each year: fall, winter, and spring. Results will be shared with parents at conferences in November.

Curricular Updates

Reading Workshop:

We've been working on tackling tricky words by using a variety of strategies and thinking, "Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?"

Writing Workshop:
We continue to work on personal narratives in writing. This week we studied Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements and tried out some of his techniques including ellipses, writing the exact actions and pop out words.

Math:
We've continued our work with unknown addends. We've also been working on odd and even numbers and finding totals using doubles plus/minus 1 and doubles plus/minus 2 strategies. (For example, 7+6. I know 6+6=12 so 7+6 must equal 13 because 7 is one more than 6 and 13 is one more than 12).

Science:
We've been learning about the body of a caterpillar and are anxiously awaiting them to become chrysalises. Will it be this week? Stay tuned!

Have a great week!
