Curricular Updates:

Content:

It was an exciting week in second grade. Ms. Zobel's class started a new science unit-Works of Water. This unit helps students develop the idea that water is a powerful force that reshapes the earth's surface. Each week we participate in an experiment that helps us learn more about this topic.

Mr. Skurr's class began the study of WI Geography, which will also focus on Kaukauna. Be prepared to learn a lot of information about Kaukauna soon! This unit is a favorite with kids (and teachers) as they learn more about an area they are already familiar with.

As both classes finish up these units in a month, we will be exchanging classes for our daily half hour of content time. Mr. Skurr and Ms. Zobel are excited to get to know each other's classes a little better during this time!

Math:

We will be taking our first unit test this week. They will be shared at conferences. When we get back after break we will be starting Unit 2, Adding and Subtracting to 200. We'll begin with a review of numbers to 200. We will work to understand that the three digits of a 3-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. We'll be working with standard equations and story problems with numbers through 200.

By the end of the year, second graders are expected to count by 5s, 10s, and 100s to 1000, so any extra practice at home or in the car is helpful! If you only have a couple minutes, you don't have to have your child start from 5 or 10. You could pick a random number such as 465 and count up from there.

Writing:

We're continuing to work on adding to details to our writing by balancing the dialogue, inner thinking, feeling, actions and setting to make our stories come alive to our readers.

Reading:

We've been focusing on the big idea that readers stop when they notice trouble and use a strategy to figure it out. We ask ourselves, Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right?
