Second Grade Scoop October 15-19

We’ve had the privilege to have some guest presenters at our school over the past weeks. The Kaukauna Fire Dept. came in to talk with students about knowing safety plans at school and at home. In addition, Larry the Science Guy came in to show us some amazing and fun things that can be done applying science principles. On Friday, Ryan Flessner, our math staff developer from Butler University, taught our class a math lesson. He was impressed with our problem solving strategies!

Curricular Updates:

Science:

This week we said goodbye to our butterflies. As a wrap up of this unit, students are writing a nonfiction book about the butterfly experience - and will get a chance to share their books with the residents at Kindred Hearts Senior Living when we go there on the 24th.

Math:

Our math work with word problems has continued through the week and students are realizing the importance of their reading skills to help solve these problems. Practice with math facts and building numbers continue to be part of our daily routines in math as well.

Writing:

Our writing time this week included a lot of different things. We wrote Thank You cards to the Kaukauna Fire Dept. and talked about different purposes for writing. In addition, we are finishing up our nonfiction butterfly books to show our learning in Science. Lastly, we continue to write small moment stories, and are utilizing a checklist to help us set goals and improve our writing.

Reading:

The idea of setting goals is something we are also doing in reading. Students are thinking about different strategies that they consistently use, as well as strategies that feel they could use more to help them as readers (i.e. creating a movie, figuring out word meaning, etc.). As the books we read get more difficult, it’s important to have a variety of strategies to help us out.

Have a great week!
