December 19-23

While the weather and windchill is still above zero, we are encouraging students to get outside on the weekends and be active. Or if you are inside, play board games or do arts and crafts projects.

Reminder: Bring a Wisconsin photo for Mr. Skurr's class on Tuesday.

After you had a chance to review the Unit 2 math test, please make sure to return. Please also be returning student Conference Portfolio binders.

Upcoming events:
December 24 - January 1 -- No School

Curriculum Updates
Reading
As readers of informational text, we have been practicing giving a retell about a topic (after reading more than one book on that topic). Also, as the books we read become more challenging, we are practicing how to use clues from the book to help us understand these new words. Then we can use these new words as a writer!

Writing
Our informational writing unit has been an enjoyable one. Second grade writers have loved writing informational texts with lots of information and text features. This coming week will be spent fine-tuning, revising different parts of the text, editing, and adding the finishing touches to our published pieces.

Math
We are finishing up our measurement unit in math this coming week. We'll review and take the test right after break. As part of our daily routine, students continue to work with coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes) and practicing our fluency with addition and subtraction. Our next unit will focus on subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers.

Content
Ms. Zobel just finished exploring the question with Mr. Skurr’s students, “How does a canyon form?” Ask your child about the cornmeal canyon activity we did.

Mr. Skurr worked with Ms. Zobel’s students this week to study how Wisconsin geography affects what the people do. Many people in our state work in farming and paper making because of the land. Did you know that 50% of the cranberries grown in the world come from Wisconsin!! This coming week students will be sharing a picture of a place they have gone in Wisconsin to wrap up the geography unit.
