Second Grade Scoop December 2-6

Hello,
It's hard to believe it's December already! As the weather turns colder and the snow continues to fly, please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for recess.

Upcoming events:

Tuesday, December 11 - No School
Thursday, December 13 - Family Night (PJ’s and Publishing)-Students may wear pjs to school.

Curriculum Updates:

Reading-Second graders continue to read nonfiction. We've worked on solving tricky words and learning the specific topic in our nonfiction books. This week we've begun to work on reading across a topic by reading several books on the same topic to grow our learning even more.

Writing-We continue to work on writing nonfiction books. We had a mini celebration on Monday with second graders in both classrooms. This week we are working on writing with a specific audience in mind and adding descriptions to teach that reader.

Math – Unit 3 begins this week. This unit focuses on length and shapes. Students will use measurement skills to collect and organize data as they display measurements on line plots.  They will analyze measurements given in different units to learn the relationship between the size of a measuring unit and the number of units. During the first week of this unit, we will be learning how to measure with centimeters and how to distinguish different shapes by their features.

Content-We've begun the first week of our switch. Students in Ms. Zobel's room have been in Mr. Skurr's room for content and vice versus.

Mr. Skurr's class has started the Works of Water unit.  This unit helps students develop the idea that water is a powerful force that reshapes the earth's surface. Each week we participate in an experiment that helps us learn more about this topic.

Ms. Zobel's class began the study of WI Geography, which will also focus on Kaukauna. Be prepared to learn a lot of information about Kaukauna soon! This unit is a favorite with kids (and teachers) as they learn more about an area they are already familiar with.
