Your child received a Six Flags Six Hour Reading Program form last week. If your child reads six hours at home between now and February 26th he/she will earn a free ticket to Six Flags to be used this summer. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Reading-We will be finishing up our 3rd reading unit focused on characters and the lessons they learn this week. We will begin our 4th unit at the end of the week in which we will work on fluency, literary language, and meeting the challenges of longer books.

Writing - We are finishing up our realistic fiction stories this week and will write an on demand for our portfolios. We will begin our unit on poetry writing next week. This unit is a favorite every year! We will be writing free verse poems - poems that do not rhyme or have a certain pattern. You'll be amazed at what the children produce!

Content-
Mr. Skurr's class will be with Ms. Zobel and beginning the Plant Adaptations Unit. This weekwe will explore how seeds travel. Students will make their own seeds

fly. Next week they will learn the importance of water (which is taken in by the roots) for plants, and what is about dirt that plants really need. They built a Root Viewer to see up close how roots behave.
Ms. Zobel's class will be with Mr. Skurr to start learning about local government. We will first look at what citizens and communities are, as a lead in to what government is and why we need it.

Math - We are using the strategies we have learned for solving 2-digit addition and subtraction to solve mixed word problems over the next 2 weeks.  Our word problems week can be solved using many of the different strategies. Students will be working on reading the problem carefully, thinking about what they know and what they need to know, and deciding which strategy they can use to solve for the unknown.
