Second Grade Scoop Week of March 4th

We made it through our first full week in awhile last week! It was great to get back into our regular routines.

March 8th - 11:30am Release
March 19th and 21st - Conferences (more information about signing up will be coming soon)
March 22nd - No School

This week our Service Group will be starting a Penny War to purchase books for the Children's Hospital. Students can bring in pennies for their classroom or silver coins (or dollars) to count against another classroom's pennies. There will be a pizza lunch for the classroom that collects the most pennies.

Reading -
The beginning of our Reading unit is focusing on students reading fluently - this includes reading at a just-right pace, talking like the characters would talk, and reading in longer phrases. Feel free to have your child read to you at night to practice their fluency.

Writing -
Students are now poets in our new Writing unit. We are learning to look at things in a different way (poet glasses) and we’ll be exploring this week how to use some poetry techniques like repetition and comparisons (metaphors/similes).

Content-
Mr. Skurr's class continues to work with Ms. Zobel in the Plant Adaptations Unit. Students learned the importance of sunlight to plants and built grass heads. We’re hoping they grow this week! We’ll also be learning that plants have different needs in terms of sunlight and water.

Ms. Zobel’s class continues to work with Mr. Skurr to learn about local government. We will be role playing a city council meeting and looking at various services local government provides.

Math -

Students will continue to work on solving word problems, having to utilize strategies to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. This week we will finish up the unit by looking at two-step word problems.
